Framing those bare and boring bathroom mirrors has become one of the latest design trends among home owners and DIYer’s in recent years, and it’s no wonder why! Once you lay your eyes on a beautifully framed mirror it’s hard to imagine your own naked bathroom mirror without the feeling that something is just missing.

Many people see a stylish and beautifully framed mirror and wonder “How can I achieve the same results without breaking the bank?  Or my back?”  If this describes you, then you are in luck as this is the topic of our blog today where we will discuss 3 different options to framing a mirror:

  1. DIY (Do It Yourself)
  2. Buying Already Framed Mirrors
  3. Buying a DIY Mirror Frame Kit

Each option will have its own pros & cons to go along with selecting that particular option, so let’s get to it.

Option 1: DIY (Do It Yourself)

The DIY option is the cheapest option without a doubt and there have been a number of great articles written that guide you through the whole process of building your own mirror frame.  Below we have listed a few such articles for you.  For the DIY option, it is very beneficial to have at least a basic knowledge of carpentry and the proper power tools.  Yet, if you can set aside the time, are an experienced and confident DIYer that already has the necessary tools, and can find the material you desire, then this may be a good option for you!

Below are links to a few articles, listed in no particular order that can show you how to make your own frame.  Just click one of the links below and follow their tutorials to get started, but you might want to read all of your options before making this your choice, to make sure it is indeed the best option for you.

It can be a truly rewarding experience to build your own mirror frame, especially when you can build it however you like.  However, it should be mentioned that building your own bathroom mirror frame can be more involved and difficult than initially anticipated.  Finding a frame material that is unique or decorative enough for your project without breaking your budget may prove to be a challenge all its own.  If a simple frame is all you desire, however, most home improvement stores will have molding that might fit the bill.  There are several options for attaching the frame, each with its own pros & cons, research these options carefully as not all adhesives are created equally.

Pros – Rewarding with a sense of ownership and can be the most affordable (depending on material) option.

Cons – Limited material choices, time-consuming,  requires research into options of how to attach the frame, requires experience, knowledge and specialty tools, and could be dangerous if not done properly.

Option 2: Buying Already Framed Mirrors

When remodeling your bathrooms, you may have the option (or not) to remove your current bathroom mirrors.  If you have no mirrors in place or have already removed them from the wall and are looking for something antique or odd shaped, this option may appeal to you.

This may be the only option if you want an authentic antique frame.  On the Internet, you can find a plethora of pre-framed mirrors that you can buy and then just hang them where you want a mirror.  The problem with this option is that you cannot always find the size or color you were hoping for and shipping can sometimes be quite costly considering the size of the mirror.  Estate sales can however always be a good source to find an inexpensive (relatively) framed mirror if this is what you have in mind.

Pros  –  Easy to hang and a great option for an avid antique fan.

Cons  –  May require the removal of the current mirror, which can be expensive, not a lot of choices or sizes to choose from, can also be expensive to ship if bought online.

Option 3: Buying A DIY Mirror Frame Kit

If you have not removed your current mirrors, then don’t…  this next option can even cover the ugly black edges creeping up over the sides of your current mirror.

In recent years, Mirror Frame Kits have made their way into the scene and have become a favorite option for Homeowners, Designers, Flippers, Stagers and DIYers for a number of reasons. Let’s discuss a few of them.

  1. Affordable  – Consider the costs of removing your current mirrors, framing and reinstalling, which can cost thousands, many have found that they can achieve the same results with a DIY Mirror Frame Kit for a tiny fraction of the cost.
  2. Easy to Install   Mirror Frame Kits are not only beautiful; they are also incredibly easy to install. Most frames can be installed in a matter of minutes and require no special tools. In fact, everything you will need to install the frame is included in your order!
  3. Flexibility If building a new house, you can choose to have a plain, bare mirror installed and then later choose the frame of your choice from one of the many elegant mirror frames available.
  4. Durable  – Quality mirror frame kits are made to be durable and last for years to come. They have an adhesive backing that will keep them in place for years and if cared for properly, will add elegance that will last for decades.

Pros  – Affordable, quality picture frame material, quick & easy to install with an ever-growing amount of designer options available.

Cons  –  Not always an option for a custom cut, non-rectangular mirrors.
